the baby bonus. there are some people that abuse the baby bonus so do you think instead of Giving people?

$4000 do you think they should give them $4000 worth of vouchers so that they can only buy stuff for the baby instead of for themselves

no I think the idea of the money is to not only buy baby goods (which most people buy before the baby arrives, therefore the bonus is not applicable) but to help with expenses needed for the family after the baby arrives and usually there is only 1 income coming in while the mother is off work.

Isn’t it paid in fortnightly installments over 6 months now anyway?

In my case we got $5000 when our last son was born and because he was our third baby and I didn’t need anything for him we used it to purchase a new lawn mower, a dryer and paid out our credit card. Can’t see anything wrong with using it for those things that we needed. When our first son was born we got $4000 and used it to pay bills as hubby’s work wasn’t going too well.
Not everyone abuses the privilege so don’t lump everyone into the same category.

I would agree with that, except that there are always things that are not considered "baby" items that your child will need, such as band-aids, certain kinds of foods, books, and gas to get them where they need to go, just to name a few.

i think it would be best to have $2000 given straight, and then have $2000 rebates as well.
with the rebates, parents should be able to post in the receipts for anything baby-related and be re-reimbursed for those purchases.

If they had vouchers it would limit the suppliers and stores. If they had rebates only, many people wouldn’t be able to afford the initial purchases in the first place.

They should scrap the baby bonus altogether and keep the cash to help working parents who really want a baby, not teens and losers who consider pregnancy a cash cow. Knowing that since the baby bonus, more children than ever have been in and need foster care is a pretty good indication that millions of dollars are distributed to people who see babies as a quick buck.

I bought a car with mine. Her carseat would fit in the car I had originally.
It’s not specifically for bay stuff. It’s for unexpected expenses that come up when you have the baby.

You don’t NEED the $4000 to buy the stuff you need for a baby- we purchased EVERYTHING for well under $1000 and that INCLUDES all the nappies that would be needed from birth all the way through to toilet training because we purchased cloth nappies!

My husband was unfairly dismissed from his job while I was pregnant- fired for being a union member to be specific. We used the baby bonus to pay back the bills that accumulated while he was unemployed and to help get us back on our feet so that we could put food on the table. If it had been given out as vouchers for baby stuff only we would have had to declare bankruptcy, sell our home and pay double our mortgage repayments for rent on a house a quarter of the size of the one we are only 2 years off owning OUTRIGHT!
We had purchased ALL of the baby stuff BEFORE he got fired- a gorgeous cot from Ikea, a cot canopy and fancy change table and the pram and car seat. What baby stuff would we have purchased with the baby bonus? Disposable nappies? We tried pretty much EVERY brand on our son (because we were given a LOT at the baby shower) and he had an allergic reaction to EVERY SINGLE ONE!

The government has toyed with the idea and it is the situations of families like ours that keep making them decide against the vouchers or redemption only plans- it’s just not fair to those who had no plans to use the baby bonus for anything other than a BONUS for a nest egg and had no choice BUT to use it or go without food or shelter!
